Measurements for the PES Pareto Method of Identifying Contributors to Disk Drive Servo System Errors

چکیده
This is the second in a series of three papers describing a method of allocating the uncertainty in the Position Error Signal (PES) of a magnetic disk drive servo system among its constitutive components (“noises”). Once identified and ranked, the most critical noises can be attacked first, either by finding ways of reducing them or by altering system components to be less sensitive to them. The method requires the measurement of frequency response functions and output power spectra of each servo system element. Each input noise spectrum can then be inferred and applied to the closed loop model to determine its effect on the PES uncertainty. The current paper describes the techniques and measurements that were obtained as part of the PES Pareto Method. 1. Measurements for the PES Pareto Method In a companion paper [1], a method is presented for separating the contributions of various sources of uncertainty (“noises”) in the Position Error Signal (PES) of the track–follow servo in a disk drive. This method requires the construction, from measurements or design models, of component filters and output power spectra; these filters and spectra are then used to compute input noise spectra. The noise spectra are then fed individually through the closed loop model to determine their individual contribution to PES uncertainty [2]. Disk ? RT NRROf? PSN Dem. } {{ } D(s) PES AD? An Overview of the PES Pareto Method for Decomposing Baseline Noise Sources in Hard Disk Position Error Signals
Daniel Abramovitch Hewlett-Packard Laboratories 1501 Page Mill Road, M/S 2U-10 Palo Alto, CA 94304 Abstract– This paper describes the PES Pareto Method, a useful tool for identifying and eliminating key contributors to uncertainty in the Position Error Signal (PES) of a magnetic disk drive[1, 2, 3]. Once identified and ranked according to their overall effect on PES, the top–ranking sources can...
متن کاملThe PES Pareto Method: Uncovering the Strata of Position Error Signals in Disk Drives
This paper and the two that accompany it will describe a method of breaking down the Position Error Signal (PES) of a magnetic disk drive to its contributing components. Once these components are identified, they can be ranked in terms of their overall effect on PES and thus the most critical ones can be worked on first. This method is based on three things: an understanding of how Bode’s Integ...
متن کاملPosition Error Signal Estimation at High Sampling Rates Using Data
Track density in hard disk drives (HDDs) is related to the performance characteristics of the HDD servo control system. Higher track density can be achieved by improving the performance characteristics of the servo controller that keeps the head close to the center of the track. The performance of the control system however is often limited by its bandwidth. High bandwidth implies high sampling...
متن کاملPosition error signal estimation at high sampling rates using data and servo sector measurements
The sampling rate in most hard disk drives (HDDs) is limited by the number of servo burst sectors that have prewritten position error signal (PES) data and by the spinning speed of the HDD. This paper presents an algorithm that can generate estimates of the PES during read at high sampling rates by processing the dedicated servo burst measurements and the mean square error (MSE) path metric dat...
متن کاملDecomposition of Baseline Noise Sources in Hard Disk Position Error Signals Using the PES Pareto Method
This paper uses the PES Pareto Method[1] and measurement techniques for isolating noise sources[2] to decompose the Position Error Signal (PES) of a Lynx II hard disk drive manufactured by Hewlett-Packard. This accomplishes three things: it demonstrates the utility of the PES Pareto Method in a practical example, it allows us to discover which noise sources are insignificant to PES, and it iden...
